Privacy
Boo Cue has no accounts, no analytics, no advertising and no third-party tracking. This page describes everything it actually does with data, in plain terms.
The microphone
Boo Cue listens to the room while you are tracking a film. That audio is never recorded, never stored, and never leaves your phone.
Matching happens entirely on the device: the app compares what it hears against an audio fingerprint already downloaded to the phone, and the only thing that comes out of the comparison is a position in the film. There is no recording to upload, because no recording is made.
The microphone is used only while you are on the tracking screen. It is released when the film ends, when Boo Cue stops hearing the film for long enough to conclude it is over, or when you leave.
What does leave your phone
Three things, and nothing else.
1. A film title you searched for, when nothing matched. When you tap Search, Boo Cue first looks through the catalog already on your phone. If it finds something, nothing is sent anywhere. If it finds nothing, the title you typed is sent to our server so it can look in the full catalog.
The server counts how many times each title has been searched and whether it found anything, so we know which films to add next. It stores the search term, the number of times it has been seen, and when it was first and last seen. Nothing identifies you or your device — not an account, not a device identifier, not a profile.
If you were offline when you searched, the title is kept on your phone and sent the next time the app has a connection. Only the title is sent; the time you typed it stays on the device.
2. Which film you asked for details about. When you open a film, the app fetches its scare list and its audio fingerprint from our server. The server therefore sees that somebody requested a particular film. It is not linked to you, and no viewing history is stored.
3. Ordinary network information. Like any web request, these carry your IP address to our hosting provider (Amazon Web Services) in order to deliver a response. We do not enable request logging, so these are not retained by us.
What stays on your phone
- The audio, as above.
- Which films you actually watched or tracked. This is never sent anywhere.
- Your settings — warning lead time, haptics, sound, screen dimming.
- Downloaded film details and audio fingerprints, stored in the app's private storage and excluded from iCloud backups.
- Anything to do with the optional accessory. Pairing happens over Bluetooth between your phone and the device, and no accessory data reaches our server.
Deleting the app removes all of it.
What we do not do
- No accounts, sign-ups or logins.
- No advertising, ad identifiers or ad networks.
- No analytics or crash-reporting SDKs.
- No selling or sharing of data with anyone, because there is nothing to sell.
- No profiles, and no attempt to work out who you are.
Children
Boo Cue is built around horror films and is not directed at children. It does not knowingly collect anything from anyone, of any age.
Changes
If this policy changes in a way that affects what leaves your phone, the change will be described here rather than quietly amended.
